Research Interest

My work focuses on understanding the life history strategies of marine organisms paying special attention to fish. We focus on targeted species by the fisheries since we are interested in including larval ecology into the fisheries management. Particularly, we are now working on species of large and medium pelagic fish, such as tuna. Field surveys that we perform almost yearly give us the needed data to explore natural populations and their environment. Our collaboration with the University of Corvallis has been very helpful in designing the main road to follow on these aspects. Experimental designs are key tools to help us to understand how the physiology, the environment and the life strategies combine in organisms. Together with the IEO installations in Mazarrón and the University of Bergen we have begun a collaborative experience in bonito and tuna. Results from laboratory will help us to improve ecological models to understand the individuals’ performance and the population dynamics.

We are also interested in understanding why so many species aggregate in the Balearic Islands to spawn. In collaboration with oceanographers we try to understand the relationship between the environment and the pelagic habitat. Comparing the dynamics in our area with those in the Gulf of Mexico has allowed us to compare the drivers of tuna larval habitats. Worldwide distributions are helping us to understand how patterns reproduce at the large scale, thanks to working with the Dalhousie University and the UNEP-WCMC.

We are trying to get engage more and more in projects with the aim of divulgating science to the society in general. Bringing science to daily life is our little collaboration for the world to change, especially teaching and learning from kids who have a lot to teach us about the possibilities of nature. The transference of knowledge on the marine systems and organisms is a must when you live in an Island like Mallorca.
