La semana próxima da comienzo en Madrid el “XII Congreso Nacional de Acuicultura 2009” que se desarrollará durante los días 24 al 26 de noviembre de 2009 y al que asistirá la investigadora del Centre Oceanogràfic de les Balears, Montserrat Ramón que presentará dos comunicaciones orales:

  • Pautas de crecimiento y mortalidad del mejillón cultivado en mar abierto en el delta del Ebro. Autores: M. Ramón, E. Dámaso y E. Galimany.

    Abstract: Growth and mortality of cultured mussels were analyzed in a semi-exposed area during two years by means of a floating structure. Initial mean lengths were 33 mm in October 2007 and reached 60 mm in June 2008. For the first culture cycle (2007-2008), mussels near the surface showed higher growth than those on other depths studied (3 and 6 m) except for August, when we found no length differences between depths. Monthly mortality was below 5% except for summer. Even so, such mortality rates were much lower than those found for mussels cultured in a nearby location, Alfacs bay (100%). It still needs to be confirmed if these tendencies are also observed in the second culture cycle (2008-2009). These results are very important for the local mussel shellfisheries showing similar mussel yield (size and length) between the semi-exposed area and the Ebro Delta bays. Moreover, mortality associated to high temperatures in the bays could be avoided.

  • Preferencias alimentarias de Mytilus galloprovincialis. Autores: E. Galimany, M. Ramón y M. Delgado.

    Abstract: The feeding behavior of cultured mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) was investigated in a N.W. Mediterranean estuary. For this purpose, the phytoplankton species of the bay water, and stomach contents, feces and pseudofeces of mussels were identified and quantified at four different periods throughout a year. Despite the high abundances of diatoms in the natural water, it was mostly dinoflagellates that were positively selected and ingested.
