CV Summary

Safo Piñeiro Rodríguez graduated in Marine Science from the Universidad Católica de Valencia (UCV) in 2013. In 2014 he obtained a master degree in Oceanography from the Universidade de Vigo (UVIGO). His Master’s thesis was conducted at the Instituto de Investigacións Mariñas (IIM-CSIC) on the wind and tide influence on the circulation in the Ria de Vigo, an inlet affected by coastal upwelling dynamics.

He holds a PhD in Physics from the Universitat de les Illes Baleares (UIB) since 2021. His thesis’ research was carried out at the Centre Oceanogràfic de les Balears (COB) of the Instituto Español de Oceanografía (IEO, CSIC) in the framework of the ATHAPOC project (CTM2014-54374-R), and with the financial support of an FPI Predoctoral Fellowship (BES-2015-074316). During this period, he conducted several research placements at the Centro Oceanográfico de Gijón (COG, IEO-CSIC) and the National Oceanography Centre Southampton (NOCS, UK). His work was focused on mixing dynamics and thermohaline variability of the deep waters of the Western Mediterranean during recent decades.

He was subsequently employed in the GORGUEL project at the COB working on the study of the variability of the circulation off the coast of Cartagena, and he is currently working at the IEO-CSIC’s Ocean Dynamics Group at the COB, employed in the 5-ESMARES2 project (‘Evaluación y seguimiento de las Estrategias Marinas y seguimiento de los espacios marinos protegidos de competencia estatal’).

He is a physical oceanographer with a primarily observational approach. His main scientific interests focus on a wide range of deep-ocean oceanographic processes occurring at different temporal and spatial scales — from the small-scale mixing processes to the large-scale ocean variability — and how they are connected, constituting a key part of understanding ocean and climatic dynamics. He also has a strong interest in the sustained, systematic ocean observation and its use as a tool to better understand ecosystem dynamics and improve marine resources management.
