Asvín Pérez presenta los resultados en el Congreso

Asvín Pérez, becaria FPI del Govern de les Illes Balears, asistió entre los días 3 a 7 de junio al 10th Colloquium Crustacea Decapoda Mediterranea que se celebró en Atenas (Grecia).

Durante el mismo, presentó en la sesión B "Biología larvaria y morfología" la comunicación oral "New findings on larval stages of decapod of fishing interes in the Balearic Sea" basado en resultados obtenidos en el marco del proyecto de investigación IDEADOS.

El evento hizo énfasis en investigaciones innovadoras en sistemática, taxonomía, evolución, filogenia, ecología, comportamineto, sociobiología, desarrollo y biología larval, fisiología, simbiosis, parasitología, genética, biología molecular, biogeografía, conservación y especies introducidas de los decápodos.

Abstract: Decapods are the main target species of the deep water bottom trawl fisheries in the western Mediterranean, producing huge earnings due to the high market value of some of these species. In this basin, the Balearic Sea is one of the major fishing areas of these fleets, as well as of small-scale fisheries targeting also decapods. Despite their economical importance, little is known about their larval ecology and spatial distribution. Most of these species produce pelagic larvae. The objective of this study is to describe the abundance, distribution and species composition of decapods larval communities off the Balearic Sea, focusing on commercial species, whose larvae have been rarely cited previously or are even unknown. The abundance and spatial distribution of different decapods larval stages was investigated from samples collected during two multidisciplinary research surveys in winter 2009 and summer 2010, using depth-stratified sampling devices (Multinet and Mocness). Sampling was carried out in two areas showing different environmental conditions, northern and southern Balearic Islands. Two stations, located over the 200 (shelf break) and 900 (midlle slope) m isobaths, were sampled in each area. Around 120 decapods taxons were identified. Most species and developmental stages aggregated at the upper layers (above 75 m), both in winter and summer. The distribution of several larval stages of four commercial species are of special reference. Red shrimp larvae were caught during summer, whereas rose shrimp larvae appeared both in summer and winter only at the 200 m station. This temporal and spatial distribution coincides with their main trawl fishing grounds and spawning times. These results improve the understanding of larval ecology of some of the main commercial decapods in the Balearic Sea, which can be useful for further maintenance of their populations’ level.
