Abstract: Reviews of 22 published papers with 591 estimates of stable isotopes of 40 fish species have been investigated at Western Mediterranean. Several ecosystems: coastal lagoons, river deltas and littoral and offshore areas have been compared in order to asses effects of habitat on trophic responses. Effects of fisheries protection on stable isotopes signatures of C and N have been also assessed. In coastal lagoons, δ13C increases where there is limited exchanged with sea. In river deltas, a high relationship between δ13C and fish body size was found. Among species found in protected areas, trophic level is higher in areas with total protection while among species out of protected areas there is an increase of δ13C with body size. The results of species both inside as outside protected areas showed an increase in δ13C and δ15N in protected areas and an increase of body size depending on degree of protection. Trophic level is maximum in areas with total protection. A mean trophic level around 3.64 was calculated higher than previously reported for herbivorous and omnivorous from stomach contents analyses. In general, there is a positive relationship between δ15N and body size and trophic levels.
