Short CV

Maribel García-Ibáñez is a biogeochemical oceanographer with a deep interest in the link between chemical and physical oceanographic processes and their implications in the marine environment. Her PhD focused on understanding the anthropogenic perturbation in the inorganic carbon cycle in the North Atlantic Ocean. The outcomes of her PhD, and other works that she co-authored, highlighted the role of water mass circulation in the relatively fast acidification rates of the intermediate and deep waters of the Subpolar North Atlantic.

Maribel’s professional background encompasses diverse projects, ranging from detecting leaks in offshore reservoirs related to carbon capture and storage (CCS) to characterizing dyes used to measure seawater pH. Her expertise extends to exploring the internal consistency of seawater carbonate system measurements, understanding the processes influencing carbon uptake in the Southern Ocean, and analyzing tipping points for North Atlantic cold-water corals. Her latest research focuses on investigating ocean acidification of the Mediterranean Sea.

Since 2021, Maribel has been part of the Scientific Steering Committee of the 'International Ocean Carbon Coordination Project' (IOCCP) within the ‘Ocean Interior Observations from Ships and Autonomous Vehicles’ theme, where she leads discussions on designing a new, resilient production model of certified reference materials for the seawater carbonate system.
