CV Summary

I am a marine ecologist researching the functioning and structure of marine communities and food webs, their space-time variability and their vulnerability/resilience to anthropogenic impacts such as climate change and fishing.

I graduated in Marine Sciences (University of Cádiz) and obtained a Master in Applied Ecology within the Erasmus-Mundus Program, developing my Master Thesis on the temporal variability of zooplankton populations in the Mediterranean at the GEOMAR Institute in Kiel. My PhD (IEO-University of Oviedo, 2017) focused on the food web of the North-Atlantic Iberian ecosystem, studying the diets of demersal and pelagic fish species, how do they vary responding to changes in fishing pressure and hydro-climate variables and what is the role of these species in the benthic-pelagic connectivity. As a postdoc, I have worked in the project “SeaDNA – Assessing marine biodiversity and structure using environmental DNA: from groundtruthing to food web structure and stability” (funded by NERC) at Imperial College London. In this project I combined different trophic methods (i.e., DNA-metabarcoding, microscopy, stable isotope analysis and food-web models) to obtain the best possible estimates of pelagic food web structure.

During my career, I have combined education with part-time jobs as lab and field technician. I have participated in over 10 scientific surveys at sea and I have carried out internships and research stays at different institutions in Europe, America and Asia.

Currently I hold a Juan de la Cierva fellowship cofunded by the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities at the Group of Ecosystems Oceanography (GRECO) tutored by Dr. Manuel Hidalgo to study the vulnerability of both Mediterranean and Atlantic ecosystems to anthropogenic stressors.
