Abstract: Plastic pollution has permeated every part of the global oceans, posing a significant threat to diverse ecosystems at multiple levels, from individual species and food webs to entire habitats. Deepening our understanding of the effects of marine plastic pollution, as well as preventing and mitigating its impact, represents one of the most pressing environmental, social, and economic challenges of our time. The PlasticFlow project specifically aims to create groundbreaking scientific and technical insights to tackle one of the current major threats to global oceans: plastic pollution. This project will develop an integrated and holistic approach by incorporating the innovative perspective of the biogeochemical cycle of plastics into marine plastic pollution research, giving groundbreaking insights into the distribution, impact, and fate of microplastics across diverse marine habitats. Employing a holistic approach, PlasticFlow will investigate the linkages between abiotic and biotic marine compartments, exploring the dynamics of microplastic accumulation and its effects on marine ecosystems.
The objective of the project PlasticFlow is to generate groundbreaking scientific knowledge regarding the transference of plastics across different marine habitats and biota as well as studying its effects and fate in the marine environment. Specifically, the project aims to investigate the main abiotic and biotic reservoirs of microplastics, focusing on sources and sinks and their interconnection, with a particular emphasis on the biologically-mediated transfer processes. This is explored under the new perspective of viewing the plastic cycle as a branch of the carbon cycle.
The following specific objectives will be addressed:
