José Carlos Rodríguez Castañeda was born and raised in a fishing town in Venezuela (Marigüitar, Sucre). He received his bachelor’s degree in Marine Biology from the Universidad de Oriente, Venezuela, with a Cum Laude distinction (2019), and later completed a master’s degree in Marine Ecology from the University of the Balearic Islands, Spain, with an outstanding distinction (2021). Currently, he is pursuing a PhD in Marine Ecology from the University of the Balearic Islands.

His areas of interest include the study of pelagic fish communities, focusing on their biological and fisheries parameters, and the influence of environmental variables on these.

He participates in the Mediterranean International Acoustic Survey (MEDIAS) and as research collaborator in the department of Biology in the University of the Balearic Islands.

In May of 2022, he joined the Group of Development of Acoustic Techniques (Grupo de Desarrollo de Técnicas Acústicas, DETAC) as higher graduate in Technical and Professional Activities under the Marine Strategies Framework in the descriptor 1 Biodiversity, with the objective of determining the Good Environmental Status (GES) of small and medium pelagic fish populations through the analysis of temporal series (biology, abundance, distribution,…) in the Levantino-Balear (LEBA) and Estrecho Alborán (ESAL) demarcations.
